Queens College’s Journalism and Liberal Arts (JALA) program offers a course of study which is ideal for anyone with a general interest in the media or for whom journalism is a career goal. An important element of its mission as a part of a public university is to provide this opportunity to those who otherwise would have difficulty gaining access to careers in the media.

The program is unique in design. It is a 21-credit minor.  And, there is a policy to maintain the program as a minor in order to allow students to take full advantage of the College’s Liberal Arts experience, that is, developing a base of knowledge to inform their writing.

Students are considered apprentices who take their instructions from accomplished journeymen in the field. All of the instructors have vast experience in New York City -- the media capital of the world.  Also, many of the classes are taught by adjuncts to foster input from practicing professionals.

In addition to the experience of the classroom instructors, the program is guided by a Journalism Advisory Board made up of distinguished and respected journalists, many of whom are tied to some of the largest and best known media institutions in the world.  The Board’s committment to the program extends to cultivating mentorship opportunities and helping to provide internships.

All JALA classes require students to do a great deal of reporting. Students are offered the opportunity to have their work published in two department publications Queens World and Queens World Online. Both publications are products of classes offered in the program.

Summer Minority High School Workshop: Every summer since 1990, JALA along with other media institutions, including Newsday, The New York Times Foundation, and the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund have sponsored a newspaper production Workshop for minority high school students.
